More Skincare Isn’t Better Skincare 🔒

Skincare has become more about consumption than care. With constant product launches and ever-changing trends, it’s easy to feel like better skin is always one more product away.

The Pressure to Have Perfect Skin

Skincare today has become a cycle of consumption and with constant new product launches, trends change weekly. Ingredients are labelled as “must-haves” and routines become longer, more complex and increasingly expensive. Somewhere along the way, skincare stopped being about understanding your skin and started becoming about keeping up with the latest trends.

There is a subtle pressure to try everything, to layer more, to believe you're missing a step to achieve that better, more flawless skin. But more isn’t always better.

When Skincare Becomes Overconsumption

Overconsumption in skincare can look like, trying every trending product, switching routines too often, layering multiple products without understanding them or buying products without knowing what your skin actually needs. The issue isn't investing in skincare, it’s consuming without intention.

When our routines change constantly, it can lead to irritation, breakouts and sensitivity. What often follows is more product purchasing in an attempt to fix what was unintentionally caused.

Understanding Your Skin First

Before adding more, it’s important to understand what you’re working with. Your skin probably doesn't need everything. It needs the right things, which means identifying your skin type, your current concerns and how your skin reacts to certain ingredients.

So rather than following trends, your focus should shift to addressing your skin specifically. This is where skincare becomes supportive instead of overwhelming.

The Case for Simplicity

Stripping back your routine can feel counterintuitive, especially when the industry encourages more. But simplicity is often where results improve.

A consistent routine built around a few effective steps allows the skin barrier to stabilise. It reduces irritation, improves tolerance to products and creates space to actually observe what is working and what isn't.

Exploring a More Natural Approach

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with simplifying my routine even further by introducing more natural elements, not as a replacement for all skincare, but as a way to reconnect with a simpler approach.

This has included using rice water as a toner, a honey and turmeric mask for brightening and hormonal acne scarring. I’ve paired this with a basic hydrating moisturiser and sunscreen.

A More Intentional Approach to Skincare

Skincare shouldn't feel overwhelming, it should feel supportive. This could mean,
using fewer products, taking time to research ingredients, introducing one change at a time and allowing consistency to do its job.

Healthy skin is not built through constant consumption. It’s built through understanding, patience and consistency. Not every trend needs to be followed. Not every product needs to be tested.
